Reader Needs Your Help

Does anyone know the answer to this? I don't. Help us out, if you can. Here goes.

Maybe you know the answer to this question...currently there is a Value City and a Burlington Coat Factory on 84/Cicero. What two stores were there before? one of the stores was Polk Brothers the others was??????

Anyone know?

Side-note: I'll get back to posting more blogs soon. I just filed my students' grades. Time will free up soon.

was that Robert hall village? Or was it a strip club...ratts I streaked through a discount store in the 70,s didn't I?

We called it Robert Hall Rip-off. Anyway, John, are you having a midlife crisis?

Which John?
If I was having a midlife crisis, I'd probably buy a Jaguar, get hair plugs, and start wearing lots of gold chains.
If you mean John Murphy, he'd probably take up streaking again. :)

Just give them "F's," McNally, and get back to blogging...

Forest City Lumber. I worked there 80 thru 82.

Where was Builders Square? Was it there at one time too? I grew up on that side of Burbank and I'm drawing a blank too.

Builder's Square was at 78th and Cicero. Now it is Food for Less and AJ Wright. Handy Andy Hardware store was at 76th and Cicero across from Ford City.

Wasn't it a place called Wolco's or something like that?

The store next to Polk Brothers was Forest City Lumber, 100% sure. Here's 1 for you John, I remmber going to Polk Bros. with my friend to play the video games (they would have them set up on display). Sometimes there would be some ass there that would HAVE to act like a tough guy and shut them off. I know one of the systems was Odysey, not sure of the other, but it was before Atari. Damn I'm getting old......lol. Robert Hall Village was on 79th & Cicero, where Jewel is now. After Robert Hall Village, it was McDades, I think next it was Phar More. Keep 'em coming John, there's alot of stuff floating around up there, lmao.......Don.

Before it was Robert Hall Village, it was TOPPS. I think that's how it was spelled. I remember the big carnival they had. A boy, I think his name was Billy DeSousa, was abducted there. He was supposed to have been found many years later in a forest preserve.

The Topps store was on 87th and Cicero. I remember when Billy DeSousa was abducted. I hung around with their cousins Dawn and (can't remember the other sister's name) during that same time period. Such a horrible story.

I wouldn't have remembered Forest City Lumber but the posters are absolutely correct. I remember when there was a flood in that area in the '70s and the parking lot was so deep, people were swimming in it. It was like a gigantic swimmimg pool (of sewage, I'm sure).

The TOPPS was on 79th, I'm positive. Then it became Robert Hall Village, then McDades, then Pharmor, then The Jewels. (you have to say "The Jewels" on the Southside) You may be thinking of Korvettes, or Service Merchandise at 87th and Cicero.

I also think that Forest City Lumber became Builder's Square before it moved to 78th and Cicero, where the Food For Less now stands.

Speaking of Korvette's, John, where's the photo I sent you of the Korvette's at 87th and Cicero with the '67 Oak Lawn Tornado in the background?

how about the bar/concert venue HAYWIRES on cicero? i saw Michael Schenker there in the early 80's!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Haywires. It used to be called Harlow's East India. There was an alleged Resurrection Mary sighting there in the early 70s.

I don't remember Robert Hall Village but the name is familiar but I'm thinking Service Merchandise??? That may have been closer to 87th Street. Oh wait! What about Puppy Palace???

Ford City Gal,

Robert Hall Village was at 79th and Cicero. It was called TOPPS before that. RHV then became McDades, which moved from it's old location at about 95th and Southwest Highway. McDades closed and became Pharmor. After that it became the Jewel that it is today.

Service Merchandise was at 87th and Cicero. The store was "L" shaped and in two pieces. Puppy Palace was there too. And I think there was a liquor store there too.

There was also a Service Merchandise at Ford City West.

I think the Service Merchandise at 87TH & Cicero was a Grant's Dept. store in the early 70's. My parents bought me a five speed bike there when I was about ten years old.

Grant's at 87th and Cicero? I guess that's possible, but are you sure you're not thinking of Korvette's? That was there also. I just think it would be odd that there would be two department stores that close in proximity. And I can't remember what was there before the Service Merchandise.

oh wow, i forgot about Forest City, my dad went there a lot. he also had a credit line at Polk Bros and always got me some sort of nice electronics for Christmas. remember the plastic Santas Polk Bros gave out? everyone and their brother had one on their porch.

from what i recall re the 87th and cicero store: Korvette's became Topps became Turnstyle became Woolco becasme Handy Andy became Builder's Square. i left in 1995 so i don't know what else afterward. i do remember at the time of korvette's/turnstyle, they used to have this weird one-seat ferris wheel ride, it was basically a circle on the wall with a little cup-shaped plastic seat that stuck out; you put in a dime and it went around really slow.

and MAN i used to love going in Puppy Palace as a kid. the sign had a puppy's head with a crown on.

Yes Service Merchandise was a Grants Department Store in the 60s and 70s. I got caught lighting matches by the pin ball machine. Folks were not thrilled with that. Also knew little Billy. The DeSousas lived on Scotsdale Avenue. I now live a bit further south...Johannesburg, South Africa! Cheers, Gary Burns

I moved away from there in 1970, but at 79th and Cicero was Scottsdale Shopping Center. My first job was at Goldblatt's snack bar. I was friends with Billy DeSousa's older sister and Billy was the same age as my brother. We lived on Scottsdale Ave.

Wow, this is the kind of nostalgia that makes me just sit glossy-eyed and remember my child hood. Whichever of those Service Merchandises was the biggest, that's the one that my mother, aunt and granny would go to and spend HOURS looking at jewelry. I mean HOURS!!! 98% of the time, they wouldn't even buy anything. But there was the electronics department that I snuck away to and played on the keyboards. Or I would go to the toys and just stare at all the Ninja Turtle action figures and dream, dream, dream. I remember the service counter in the back, and I'd wonder where that conveyor belt went to. Or I'd look at all the people's orders and wish I was getting the stuff instead. Oh man.

I've downloaded a bunch of old Chicago Tribune stories about Billy DeSousa. Really sad. I've always thought that there should have been some sort of lasting memorial to him and others like him.

Robert Hall Village had kick ass slices of pizza.

where can i find old burbank and reavis photos without going on classmates .com or other scam sites

Was that EJ Korvettes? I think it had an escalator. Fun.

Anonymous said...

Korvettes had the best record department too.

Does anyone remember the giant slide on Cicero Avenue or the Truck Driving School?

Don't forget Venture in Ford City.

I worked at Gallenkamp shoes in the 70's, had lunch at the small hamburger place in the mall, shoped at Goldblatts. Remember the shoe repair place, the shop that sold model toys, and who could forget Chicken Unlimited!
